1:1, Semi-Private or Personalized Group Training: Which Is Right for You?

You know you'd like some help with your workouts.

But then you start looking at training options and encounter a whole new set of questions.

Do you need a personal trainer?

What's semi-private training?

Is personalized group training the same thing as a fitness class?

Which one is actually right for you?

The good news is there isn't one "best" training format.

At Gym MPLS, we believe the best option is the one that gives you the level of coaching, accountability, personalization, and environment you need to succeed.

Let's break down the differences.

What Is 1:1 Personal Training?

One-on-one personal training is exactly what it sounds like:

You and your trainer.

Your session is centered around your individual goals, abilities, training history, and needs.

This can provide a high level of individual attention and allows your trainer to closely coach technique and adjust the session as needed.

1:1 training may be a good fit if you:

  • Prefer individual attention
  • Are brand new to strength training
  • Have specific performance goals
  • Want significant coaching on technique
  • Feel more comfortable training individually
  • Have needs that require more individualized modifications

For some people, that dedicated environment helps build confidence before moving into other types of training.

What Is Semi-Private Training?

Semi-private training falls somewhere between individual and group training.

A small number of people train during the same session, while still receiving individualized coaching and programming.

That distinction matters.

Semi-private training isn't necessarily a small group fitness class.

In a traditional class, everyone may complete essentially the same workout.

In semi-private training, participants can be working toward different goals or completing different exercises while sharing the coaching environment.

This can be a great fit for people who want personalized programming but also enjoy training around others.

What Is Personalized Group Training?

Personalized group training brings more people together while maintaining a coached and structured environment.

Depending on the program, exercises may be adjusted for different fitness levels, abilities, and goals.

For many people, the biggest benefit is the combination of:

Coaching + accountability + community.

You get the energy of training alongside other people without being left completely on your own.

Which Is Best for Beginners?

Any of them can be.

Being a beginner doesn't automatically mean you need 1:1 training.

Some beginners love the individual attention of personal training.

Others feel more comfortable seeing people of different fitness levels training alongside them.

The better question is:

What environment will make you feel comfortable enough to keep showing up?

Think About How Much Individualization You Want

Consider what you want from coaching.

Do you want someone focused exclusively on you throughout the entire session?

1:1 may make sense.

Do you want an individualized program while sharing the space and coach with a few other people?

Semi-private could be a great fit.

Do you thrive on group energy and accountability while still wanting coaching and modifications?

Personalized group training may be the answer.

Your Budget Matters Too

Training is an investment, and cost can be an important consideration.

Generally, sharing a training session with other people can make coaching more accessible than exclusively 1:1 training.

That doesn't automatically make one option better than another.

The goal is finding the level of support that provides value for your goals and budget.

The Best Training Environment Is the One You'll Use

You can have the perfect program on paper.

But if you dread showing up, it isn't going to help you very much.

Think about where you feel motivated.

Some people love quiet, individual coaching.

Others perform better when there's energy around them.

Neither is wrong.
