Summer Is No Excuse to Stop Training

Summer schedules tend to get chaotic fast.

Cabin weekends. Patio nights. Vacations. Kids home from school. Golf leagues. Last-minute plans that somehow turn a Tuesday into an all-day event.

And while summer should absolutely include more fun and flexibility, it doesn’t have to mean abandoning your routine completely.

At The Gym MPLS, we believe fitness should support your life—not compete with it. The goal isn’t perfection during the summer. The goal is consistency.

Because the longer you stay out of your routine, the harder it becomes to restart.

You Don’t Need Hours in the Gym

One of the biggest misconceptions about staying fit in summer is that workouts need to take over your schedule.

They don’t.

Efficient training can often be accomplished in:

  • 30–60 minutes
  • a few focused sessions per week
  • with intentional programming and consistency

That still leaves plenty of time for:
☀️ lake days
🍔 BBQs
⛳ golf
✈️ travel
🍹 summer events

Training doesn’t have to disappear just because your social calendar gets fuller.

Consistency Beats “Starting Over”

Many people fall into the cycle of:

  • taking the summer “off”
  • losing momentum
  • struggling to restart in the fall

But fitness works much better when it becomes part of your lifestyle year-round.

Even scaled-back consistency during busy seasons helps maintain:

  • strength
  • energy
  • mobility
  • healthy habits
  • mental clarity

Something is almost always better than nothing.

Hydration Matters More in Summer

Summer heat and humidity can make workouts feel harder than usual.

If you’re feeling:

  • more fatigued
  • sluggish
  • lightheaded
  • slower to recover

there’s a good chance hydration is playing a role.

As activity levels and temperatures rise, water and electrolyte intake become even more important for:

  • performance
  • recovery
  • energy levels

Adjust Your Routine - Don’t Abandon It

Not every workout needs to happen indoors.

Summer is a great time to:

  • walk more
  • bike outdoors
  • hike
  • play recreational sports
  • stay generally active

But movement still benefits from structure and intentionality.

At The Gym MPLS, we encourage members to adapt their routines for the season instead of quitting them entirely.

Because the people who stay consistent through summer are usually the ones who feel the best heading into fall.
