Why Vitamin D Deserves a Spot in Your Wellness Routine

Summer is here, and that means more opportunities to get outside. Whether you're taking a walk around the neighborhood, heading to the lake, or simply enjoying your morning coffee on the patio, you're doing more than soaking up the sunshine—you may also be boosting your Vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D plays a much bigger role in your health than many people realize. It's essential for strong bones, muscle function, immune support, and even mood regulation.

At Gym MPLS, we believe fitness extends beyond your workouts. Small daily habits—like getting outside for a walk—can have a big impact on your overall well-being.

Why Vitamin D Matters

Vitamin D helps your body:

  • Absorb calcium for healthy bones
  • Support muscle function and recovery
  • Maintain a healthy immune system
  • Support mood and energy levels
  • Promote overall wellness

Low Vitamin D levels are especially common in northern states like Minnesota, where long winters and limited sunlight can make it difficult to get enough naturally.

How Much Sun Do You Need?

During the summer months, many people can naturally produce Vitamin D through brief periods of sun exposure.

Generally, 10–30 minutes of midday sun several times per week may be enough for many individuals, depending on skin tone, location, clothing, and sunscreen use. However, everyone's needs are different.

It's important to balance sun exposure with protecting your skin from sunburn.

Other Ways to Get Vitamin D

If you're not able to spend much time outdoors, Vitamin D can also be found in:

  • Fortified dairy and plant-based milk
  • Eggs
  • Fatty fish like salmon
  • Fortified cereals
  • Supplements (when recommended by your healthcare provider)

If you suspect you may have low Vitamin D levels, talk with your healthcare provider about whether testing or supplementation is appropriate.

Keep Moving This Summer

One of the easiest ways to combine movement and sunshine?

Take a walk.

A 20-minute walk can help you:

  • Increase daily activity
  • Reduce stress
  • Enjoy fresh air
  • Potentially boost Vitamin D production

Simple habits often have the biggest impact.

This summer, challenge yourself to move outside whenever you can. Whether it's a walk before work or a workout in the park, every step counts. Stop by Gym MPLS and let our coaches help you build healthy habits that last all year long.
