Beat the Heat: Should You Work Out in the Morning or Evening?

Summer is one of the best times of year to get outside and stay active—but it's also one of the easiest times to let the heat derail your workouts.

If you've ever stepped outside on a hot, humid Minnesota afternoon, you know it doesn't take long to start feeling drained. The good news is that you don't have to stop exercising during the summer—you may just need to be more strategic about when you work out.

One of the questions we get this time of year is:

"Is it better to work out in the morning or in the evening?"

The answer? It depends on your schedule, your goals, and what helps you stay consistent.

The Benefits of Morning Workouts

For many people, early mornings are the coolest part of the day, making them an ideal time to exercise during the summer.

Morning workouts can:

  • Help you avoid peak afternoon heat
  • Make it easier to stay consistent before the day gets busy
  • Boost energy and focus for the rest of the day
  • Improve mood and productivity
  • Reduce the chance of skipping your workout due to unexpected plans

If you enjoy outdoor walks, runs, or bike rides, mornings often provide more comfortable temperatures and lower humidity.

The Benefits of Evening Workouts

Not everyone is a morning person—and that's okay.

Evening workouts can also be a great option, especially if temperatures have started to cool.

Many people notice they:

  • Feel stronger later in the day
  • Have more energy after eating throughout the day
  • Enjoy using exercise to unwind after work
  • Sleep better after moderate evening activity

If you're training outdoors, try waiting until the sun begins to set when temperatures are more manageable.

The Time of Day Matters Less Than Consistency

It's easy to get caught up in finding the "perfect" workout time.

The truth is, the best workout is the one you consistently show up for.

If mornings fit your schedule, great.

If evenings work better, that's great too.

Your body benefits far more from regular movement than from chasing the "ideal" time to exercise.

Tips for Beating the Heat

No matter when you train, a few simple habits can help you stay safe and perform your best:

  • Drink water consistently throughout the day—not just during your workout.
  • Wear lightweight, breathable clothing.
  • If you're exercising outdoors, choose shaded routes whenever possible.
  • Pay attention to humidity, not just temperature.
  • Slow your pace if you're feeling overheated.
  • Listen to your body and don't ignore signs of heat exhaustion.

Remember, it's okay to modify your workout when conditions are extreme.

Summer Movement Still Counts

Not every workout has to happen inside the gym.

Summer is a great opportunity to:

  • Go for evening walks.
  • Ride your bike.
  • Swim.
  • Paddleboard.
  • Play pickleball.
  • Hike local trails.

As we talked about in our recent blog about staying active without workouts, all movement contributes to your overall health.

The goal is to stay moving—not to be perfect.
