Build Your Summer Schedule: It’s Not Too Late to Get Back on Track
If your summer hasn't gone exactly as planned, you're not alone.
Maybe you started June with the best intentions. You planned to hit the gym four days a week, meal prep on Sundays, and get outside every evening. Then life happened. Vacations, weddings, kids' activities, lake weekends, and long workdays started filling your calendar.
Now it's the end of July, and you're thinking, "I'll just wait until fall to get back into a routine."
At Gym MPLS, we'd encourage you to do the opposite.
Don't wait for September. Build your routine now.
Summer Isn't Over
One of the biggest mistakes people make is treating summer like it's already finished.
There's still plenty of time to create healthy habits before the busy fall season arrives.
In fact, building a routine now often makes it easier to stay consistent when school starts, work picks up, and schedules become even busier.
Think of the next few weeks as your opportunity to build momentum.
Start With Your Calendar
Most people schedule:
- Work meetings
- Doctor appointments
- Kids' activities
- Vacations
But they expect workouts to "fit in."
Unfortunately, they rarely do.
Instead, schedule your workouts like any other appointment.
Pick two or three times this week that you know you can realistically make it to the gym and commit to them.
Consistency beats ambition.
Create a Routine You Can Actually Keep
You don't need the perfect schedule.
You need one you'll follow.
Instead of saying:
"I'm going to work out six days this week."
Try saying:
"I'm going to train every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday morning."
Specific plans are easier to follow than vague intentions.
Plan for Busy Days
Life is unpredictable.
Rather than assuming every day will go according to plan, build flexibility into your schedule.
Ask yourself:
- If I miss my morning workout, when can I go later?
- If I travel this weekend, how can I stay active?
- What's my backup plan?
Planning for obstacles makes them much easier to overcome.
Build Around Habits
A routine becomes easier when it's connected to something you already do.
For example:
- Stop at the gym after work before driving home.
- Go for a walk after dinner.
- Fill your water bottle while making your morning coffee.
- Pack your gym bag the night before.
Small habits reduce the number of decisions you have to make every day.
Don't Wait for Motivation
Motivation is great when it's there.
But routines aren't built on motivation.
They're built on repetition.
Showing up on the days you don't feel like it is what creates lasting progress.
The more consistently you follow your schedule, the less motivation you'll need.
Your Future Self Will Thank You
Imagine how you'll feel when September arrives.
Would you rather be starting over...
...or already have six weeks of momentum behind you?
The small decisions you make today determine how you'll feel this fall.
